This morning the Oregon Department of Insurance issued the following warning. Please read.
Scam warning
Insurance commissioners in California and Nevada are warning of a scam that targets agents.
The scam: Individuals pretending to be from state insurance divisions in California and Nevada called agents, telling agents they needed to make a penalty fee payment to avoid cancellation of their license. The callers asked for agents’ credit card and social security information.
To date, the Oregon Insurance Division has received no reports of similar incidents in Oregon. Although licensing staff at the division sometimes take this information over the phone, these calls are initiated by agents – not us. In other words, we do not call agents out of the blue and ask for credit card or social security numbers. If payment is owed, we send a letter.
